Prof. Xavier Paulès gained a Masters degree in History from École Normale Supérieure de Cachan. His PhD, from Lyon 2 University, was on Opium in Canton 1912–1937 and came out as a book in 2010 (éditions de l’EHESS). He published extensively in French, Englisn and Chinese on the issue of opium. He was the 2004 winner of the Young Scholar Award of the European Association of Chinese Studies.
